Our Story

The Professional Verifiers’ Institute came into being in 2012.  It was an unexpected but natural progression for our Veterinary and Travelling Technical Supervisor Verifiers.   We have been making conscious choices about how to best serve our individual and collective interests over the last 20 or so years.  Read the official and highly political story of how we got to here over the period since WWII at:  Where Have We Come From?

2012 was a time of considerable industry change and debate, converging with the establishment of the new “super” Ministry for Primary Industries.  Verifiers sought a relationship driven approach that acknowledged and anticipated the unique opportunities and challenges we were facing.  We see ourselves as a community of practicing professionals working in a complex, demanding and highly variable industrial environment, whilst contributing to the critically significant public good of  trust and confidence in New Zealand’s primary products and industries.

A self-determining professional body and learning institute with industrial services offered a new and progressive vehicle to influence our own destiny.  A key function is to facilitate our ongoing professional community to provide learning opportunities and promote the future capabilities of Verifiers.  We want this to clearly align to our work in the Ministry for Primary Industries and our contribution to the well-being and prosperity of all New Zealanders.  Our Society was Incorporated on 31 October 2012 then registered as a Union on 21 November 2012.

The name Professional Verifiers Institute Inc embodies the nature of this new entity:

  1. Professional and qualified veterinary and non-veterinary (Travelling Technical Specialist) verifiers, governed by ethical standards and conduct.
  2. Relationship driven, locating the purpose, role and contribution of the Verifier at the heart of our work, whilst recognising the framework of our employment relationship.
  3. A learning focused Institute, facilitating the self-sustaining attributes and mind sets of lifelong learning and tools for personal and professional development.

The essence of our approach:

Design the future – we want to understand, anticipate and influence our own destiny.

Be the change – we want to demonstrate that we are authentic in all our work and our continual improvement of that work.

Get there first – we want to lead the change,  to be out in front where the opportunities are and where we can make our own choices, not have others decide our future for us.

These features have been built into our Professional Verifiers Institute Incorporated Constitution and are in process in our principles based MPI and PVI Collective Agreement 2023-25
