We invite you to join the Professional Verifiers’ Institute (PVI)
We influence things for the better – PVI gets results on the things that matter to you:
- You’ll have a professional and strong national voice – our democratic community of practice is independent of – but influential with – our Senior Leadership Team.
- You’ll be represented in a professional way – our leaders get results in a non-confrontational and apolitical way, through the quality of our proposals.
- You’ll have input into PVI when we are negotiating our pay through a link to private sector Veterinarians and when meeting the Director regularly in our Operational, National and Remuneration Forums.
- You’ll gain confidence and skills – PVI’s support is progressive and mentors you to address issues yourself, whenever possible.
- You can rely on us if things do go astray – PVI will be there for you when you need us.
- You’ll be part of a unique community of professionals who are focused on doing great work as verifiers – and constantly improving it, to the benefit of all New Zealanders.
- PVI gets the best for our members with a ground breaking approach – we invite you to be part of it.
Why Join PVI? – FAQs
Here are some of the questions we’re often asked about joining PVI.
Q Why would I join a union? I don’t need any help.
A PVI membership isn’t about verifiers with problems. PVI is influential because we speak professionally for over 180 Verifiers in VS. When you join, you can add your professional voice to theirs so that PVI can get a better deal for all.
Q Can’t I just join if something goes wrong at work? It’s OK at the moment.
A You can join when something goes wrong, but PVI may be less able to help as It can be difficult to address issues that arose before you joined.
Q I’ve just started my great new career with MPI VS – why would I need PVI?
A Joining PVI is the best move for your career. PVI provides a community of support for people like you – with high expectations and great potential. In 2014-15, PVI helped set up the Careers Pathway framework for VS. In 2021 we have negotiated and been consulted on the National Conferences. We also help with day to day issues at work, like rosters and well being.
Q I would rather be on an Individual Employment Agreement (IEA) and am currently negotiating my own Agreement and pay – how can PVI help me?
A The IEA that MPI offers is basically the (CEA) MPI and PVI CA effective 1 July 2023-25 which PVI negotiates, minus some important rights. If you have any specific individual entitlements, these can sometimes be carried over if you change to the CEA – this is done via a letter from the employer. Please raise this with a local PVI delegate and we can provide you with further advice.
Q Most Professionals are on a fortnightly all inclusive salary and the IEA offers that. Why should I go on the CEA with a base salary plus overtime where my salary will rise and fall over the year?
A Our goal is to be professional and be treated (and remunerated) as professionals. However the current system for Plant Vet IEAs creates only the illusion of being professional. In fact it is now based on the same underlying basis as our pay as you go system, but with some important fish-hooks. For more information about the details of the IEA versus the CEA, contact our Support team for advice.
Q What do PVI membership benefits mean in practice?
A PVI does not try to offer holiday houses or discounts on tyres as benefits. Our benefits are summed up on Our Focus page.
Q I am not sure I can afford to join.
A Can you afford not to? Being part of the PVI community of practice and thereby helping design our own future is the true essence of being a professional verifier. In any case, none of us knows what life is going to throw at us next. Our fee is graduated – see below. Compare the fee to other professional groups with a union function: Chart of Comparative Professional Union Fees
Q I am a Veterinarian but not in MPI VS. Can I join PVI?
A PVI does have an Associate Member status. Contact our a member of the PVI Executive for guidance on this.
